Abstract

Couroupita   guianensis   has   showed   a   broad   spectrum   of antibacterial and antifungal activites. The fruit pulp, bark and flowers are used for medicinal applications and have antimicrobial and fungal activity. In the present study an attempt was made to evaluate cardiac protective activity of  ethanolic  extract  of  Couroupita  guianensis  flowers  on  isoproterenol induced myocardial infarction (MI). Phyto chemical screening revealed the presence of carbohydrates, alkaloids, phenols, tannins, saponins, glycosides, flavonoids, terpenes. Results revealed that there was significant (p < 0.001) increase of serum CK-MB (Creatinine kinase – Muscle and Brain) and LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) levels in ischemic control when compared with normal control. There was significant ( p < 0.001) decrease in serum levels of CK- MB and LDH in groups treated with Couroupita guianensis  at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o, when compared with ischemic control group. Results suggested that reduced myocardial tissue damage was observed in animals treated with high dose of Couroupita guianensis compared with low dose extract.
